The classic Ebbinghaus illusion consists of a circle surrounded in one image by smaller circles, and in another by larger circles. The viewer tends to perceive the circle surrounded by smaller circles as being larger than the circle in the other image, even though both are exactly the same size. The Ebbinghaus illusion is an optical illusion of relative size perception. If two circles of identical size are placed near to each other and one is surrounded by large circles and the other is surrounded by small circles, the second central circle will appear larger than the first central circle. Abstract Current accounts of the Ebbinghaus illusion emphasize either size contrast or contour interaction processes. One of the most elegant demonstrations of how context effects size perception is the Ebbinghaus illusion.

Even by the age of 10 years context‐sensitivity is still not at adult levels. Therefore, size contrast as shown by the Ebbinghaus illusion is not a built‐in property of the ventral pathway subserving vision for perception but a late development of it, and low sensitivity to the Ebbinghaus illusion in autism is not primary to the pathology.
